Dialogue Across Divides
next week, 10/2
What happens when an 8th grade class, a dorm full of college students, or a room of medical professionals confront deep disagreements and the most controversial topics head-on?
Next week, we’re hosting a talk with Dr. Aaron Yarmel, the Associate Director of the Center for Ethics and Human Values at The Ohio State University.
Dialogue Across Difference
with Aaron Yarmel and Harry Brighouse
Thursday, October 2, 2025
2:30-3:45pm Central Time
Livestream
In his work at The Ohio State University, Aaron facilitate dialogues across some of the most fraught divides—from activists interrogating the ethics of violent resistance to health care teams navigating intergroup conflict. These conversations happen in many forms: one-off events responding to urgent community needs, and ongoing programs like the bi-weekly Dorm Dialogues and the Philosophy for & With Children program.
In this time when the risks of tackling controversial topics are higher than ever, successful dialogue depends on more than goodwill: it requires strong institutional support, excellent colleagues, and a deep grounding in reliable dialogue facilitation techniques. In this talk, Aaron will share the story of his center’s dialogue initiatives and the practical techniques he counts on during even the most difficult dialogues.
